“9/8” workshop has started at Sulukule Art Academy. In the program attracting the intensive attention of children and the young in Karagümrük and Sulukule, little children who have started studies under the leadership of Şener Yolal are looking forward to give a concert.
At Sulukule Art Academy, a new rhythm class has been opened under the leadership of percussionist Şener Yolal. Children and the young living in Karagümrük and Sulukule have shown great interest in the workshop where only 9/8 rhythm lessons specific to Turkish music will be provided. Artist Şener Yolal gave brief information about his workshop before he started his studies. Stating that 9/8 rhythm is an important element of our music tradition, Yolal said “The use of this type of percussion is astonishing especially for Western musicians. It is not easy to learn and perform, it needs talent”. Underlining that he has been living in Karagümrük for 45 years, Yolal said that he is very happy to teach performing darbuka and 9/8 rhythm he learned from his father and grandfather by practicing to the young and children within Sulukule Art Academy.
